The Irma Effect

With all its fears, anxieties and damages; hurricane Irma has come and gone. Although the experience could have been much worse; there are many lessons that remain from Mother Nature's decision to press her reset button once again. Truthfully, let's not forget that natural disasters occur frequently and they serve a very important purpose in our lives.
Firstly, they clean and purify our environment by removing old, weak and dead materials, some of which were dangerous to us anyway. And, we even get a chance to help her clean up as well, as we try our hardest to get things back to normal as soon as we can. Within weeks; when one looks around, many trees will have been in full bloom again - dead branches and weak trees will have been long gone and the fresh, strong ones will have remained.
Secondly, people learn to pull together to return life to normalcy. Surely, some people died, but people die every day anyway. And, as we mourn the loss with their loved ones; those of us who escaped unscathed, get the opportunity to reflect, to recognize how short life can be and how absolutely vulnerable we really are.
Finally, and perhaps even more importantly; we get an enormous opportunity to develop a sense of what's really important in our lives, what we really need and where our focus should probably be. Unfortunately, for majority of us, within only weeks from now, we will have forgotten all this and we will have gone back to business as usual - spending time that we could use to do more important things, replacing "stuff" that we don't need, with money that we don't have - just being our same old selves as usual, just as if nothing ever really happened.

The Men's Mental Health Center Now A Not-For-Profit Organization

The Men's Mental Health Center is now a not-for-profit organization that focuses on helping men and boys meet their mental health needs, by providing a variety of specific, professional, male-friendly assessment, treatment and referral programs. Please view the information below, and please make a tax deductible donation that you can afford. Thank you.

The Men's Mental Health Center Information:

Numerous barriers prevent men and boys from admitting when they need help, from deciding to seek help when they need it, and from taking full advantage of services that are available to help them with various life challenges when they arise. Notwithstanding, from their early childhood, boys are socialized not take their general health including mental health too seriously. Even so, there is a plethora of evidence, which suggests that many men in our society could benefit from paying closer attention to their overall health, which includes their mental health. This understanding forms the foundation on which The Men's Mental Health Center in Pembroke Pines was created.
The Men's Mental Health Center is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization that was established by Psychotherapist Dr. Percy Ricketts. According to Dr. Ricketts; “the main goal of this organization is to offer a number of male-friendly counseling and other related services for men and boys of diverse backgrounds. The focus for in first year, will be to encourage men to contact the center to seek confidential help and advice on various mental health and other concerns, to encourage them to schedule mental mental health evaluations, especially for depression and anxiety, which now affect a quarter of all Americans, to encourage them to get regular free mental health check-ups and tune-ups from the licensed Mental Health Professionals at the center, and, where indicated, they will receive referrals to other appropriate professionals and organizations that can help them with their unique individual concerns.”
Dr. Ricketts stated that "in order to ensure its success during the first year of operation as a not-for-profit organization; The Men's Mental Health Center will be leaning very heavily on the generosity of the entire community for support. Donations are currently needed in both cash and kind. However, cash donations, are more urgently needed in the start-up phase. The majority of the funds received at the inception, will be used primarily to purchase mental health resources for clients, as well as to provide stipends for non-volunteer counseling staff who will be assisting at the center. The community is reminded that their donations are tax deductible and they can be conveniently made through the organization's website at: www.mensmentalhealthcenter.com. Other types of donations will be accepted on an expressed need basis only. Prospective non-cash donors may call (954) 438 5661 for confirmation."
